New collaboration agreement, 1-15-2008
Expert System, the leading provider of semantic software that discovers, classifies and interprets text information, and Professor Paul Thompson of the Computer Science department of Dartmouth College, a private Ivy League college in New England, today announced a collaboration agreement.
The partnership between Expert System and Dartmouth College focuses on the use of Expert System’s semantic technology for unstructured information management, i.e. texts in Natural Language (the language we use to speak and communicate.) The research will focus on the effectiveness and correctness of Semantic Intelligence in the analysis of large amounts of documents (reports, e-mail corpora, etc.), and in the selection and automatic extraction of relevant data.
”We are using Expert System’s semantic technology for research on electronic discovery, or e-discovery, the process which takes place when two or more organizations engaged in litigation request access to each other’s documents,” says Thompson. “We are participating in a U.S. government-sponsored benchmark evaluation of e-discovery technology to determine whether advanced information retrieval technology, such as semantic search, can provide better performance than the current state-of-the-art.”
“Joint technical development initiatives are the most interesting opportunity to create stronger and smarter relationships between University researchers and leading corporations,” explains Stefano Spaggiari, Expert System CEO. “This is why we’re enthusiastic about the interest of the Dartmouth’s Computer Science department in our technology; it’s another very interesting demonstration of the power and strategic value of semantic technologies in effectively managing natural language and textual unstructured information”.
The news of the partnership with the prestigious college in Hanover, New Hampshire comes a few months after the announcement of new collaboration agreements between Expert System and important Italian Universities (University of Trento, Ca’ Foscari University in Venice) and represents a further confirmation of the prominence acquired by semantic technology in the automatic management of language and unstructured information.
Dartmouth College
Dartmouth College, one of the leading undergraduate colleges in the United States, also has strong graduate and professional programs. Dartmouth pioneered in the use of time-sharing operating systems and hosted one of the earliest workshops on artificial intelligence in 1956. Dartmouth’s computer science faculty is known worldwide for their excellence in research.
